We all know that social media transcends borders and manifests itself globally. And it is expressed differently depending on the digital profile of the region: how connected, how much broadband, what devices, etc...
I am now in Cambodia on my way everywhere. Bandwidth is relatively expensive (I keep exceeding my quota in the hotel). Even in Siem Reap, there are many Internet shops. And there are many bloggers. Of course, I am mostly surveying english-language blogs. But even those are a mix of Cambodians and non-Cambodians.
Here you can review blogs from the Mekong region (Cambodia and Vietnam) who were nominated for best Asian Blogs. I am particularly interested in Tharum, who is an IT professional in Phnom Phen with a soft spot for the Lord of the Rings (a man after my own heart).
You can also sample a small collection of Cambodian blogs at Cambodianblogger (go figure). Not all of them are kept up as people move on to different parts of their lives or the world but still an encouraging sign.
Very quietly, social media is having an impact in pockets of the world that is greater than the tech-centric, US-focused version that I am so used to back home. It is easy to see that the social networking that arises from the simple act of regional bloggers banding together may change how communications happen in a country like Cambodia.
