This weekend, I went to Friendly's. Growing up in the Northeast, we went to Friendly's for ice cream, french fries and grilled cheese sandwiches. The one near us now doesn't live up to the memory but then what does.
But they have a cool co-creation contest going on now. This was promoted on a table tent. When I went to the Web site, I couldn't find it. Not a great sign. Sometimes I take for granted simple promotional basics: if you are going to "throw" someone from an offsite promotion, you had better have a great "catch" which usually means a prominent and persistent link on the homepage.
I Googled and found it (site search is meaningless these days). Build the Next Freindly's Favorite lets you step through a Flash wizard to define a sundae that - should it win - may find itself in the Friendly's menu. Now most of this I know because of that cardboard table tent. The Web experience is a little light on information. (This is because I followed the first Google link which took me past the main contest page wheer most of the info was) There is no mention of how long the contest is running except in fine print, what the criteria for winning is (I am guessing it is more like a sweepstakes drawing than a judged contest. But then again, that doesn't make sense if they hope to end up with an edible candidate.)
No matter how imperfectly done, I still applaud Friendly's for engaging customers in this co-creation. Look for the Big Blast-off (my entry) in that hyper-realistic, laminated Friendly's dessert menu soon.
