All we ever hear is "this is the year of mobile." Used to be only mobile tech companies were saying that. Its been the year of mobile aournd the world for some years. It may just happen in the US this year.
Here is a useful little checklist of the different ways to plan and use mobile. I have followed it up with a chart of worldwide mobile usage. Both are courtesy of the smart mobile folks at www.jouleww.com (a WPP Company). I hope you find them useful.

I feel fortunate to have worked globally with Nokia in 2004-2007. I had the chance to (1) personally experience iPhone like functionality way before it hit the US shores and (2) observe the important role that mobile played in people's everyday lives in places like Scandinavia and APAC.
Anyone who wants to read the work of a real visionary (and rebel - Vanjoki is famous for receiving the highest ever speeding ticket fine in Finland's history) should research what Anssi Vanjoki was saying back in the early 2000s - everything he was saying back then is a reality today.
