There is a hysterical report from Marcela Valdes in this week's Sunday Washington Post Book World/Book Notes section. No, not the one on SAT "novels" (not much funny about the SATs). I am talking about the buzz-building kit delivered to her on behalf of George Saunders and his new book. The list of doodads rivals the best kits produced by our friends over at BzzAgent. Tattoos! Iron-ons for t-shirts! (oh, and the book).
As if that wasn't enough, here's the official web site, as well as, the Flickr site from a fan (or family member?)
I love the author's comments on the deluge of promotion:
"I was, of course, 100 percent against it," Saunders declared via e-mail. "My book, after all, is a screed against rampant materialism. I begged them not to do it. BEGGED them! And yet, they said it would 'sell the book.' As if I care about that! Me, a person who exists above all physical needs!"
One look at the Web site and you'll have an image of George smiling as he typed up that email response. Lastly, you can submit your "Saundersesque" photos in the gallery/contest.
