Spam + Blogs = Splogs
I encountered this a lot earlier this year as I was working on travel-related blogs. Technorati was jammed up with results that were link farms - blogs set up by unscrupulous spammers filled with silly links to discount travel offers no one in their right mind would click on.
So, now there is SplogReporter. You can report these Splogs. What happens to them? Good question. I am sure they are treated harshly. After all, this response was fueled by a post from Mark Cuban on his BlogMaverick site.
Since most search engines love blogs due to their cross-linking quality, this bulking up on link farms and worthless splogs gets in the way of everybody. I know search engines are all working on ways to retrun better results sans splogs. In the meantime, maybe we should report these sites to get them out of the way.
Here is Wikipedia's take on SPLOGS.
And Somewhat Frank reports on the Technorati Web Spam Summit next week. He and Jeff Johns from SplogReporter cannot be there but I will be interested to hear what comes from it.
